You cannot make me love paper plates, I just won't fold. But you could never make me not love what's been demonized as ghetto and that is black culture.
You know life has a funny way of working itself out. I hadn’t moved yet, the apartment fell through because I didn’t have the rent after paying the deposit. And I’ve been STRUGGLING to pick myself back up since. But when your comment came through it felt like confirmation of this inner feeling I’ve had all week that I’m getting keys to my home sooner than later. So thank you for the congratulations because I will carry this feeling with me until I am home and able to unpack! I appreciate you so much, the book will happen when it’s meant to happen I’m just grateful to know it’s on your list!
Thank you for reading and sharing!!! I’m so grateful to see new faces finding the work that I put so much time, energy and effort into!! And appreciating it!!! What a gift!!! Thank you Kanika!
Thank you for this enjoyable read! I’m sorry your mother said those nasty words to you — broke is a label for objects, NEVER for people. May we all someday escape this narrative as a collective.
Thank you for reading my post, Vashti! And thank you for your kind words about my experiences. It’s tough speaking out about not having the kind of relationship with my mother that is ‘normal’ so I value your words A LOT! wow thank you so much!
I must admit that I had to take a moment to celebrate myself when I first read your comment, because what an honor! This is one of my proudest pieces because of how creative my process of creating it was. The inspiration for the piece started with the title paper plates are ghetto and I knew I wanted to write about the history of the word ghetto and how it’s been pushed onto us as Black people. But it didn’t flow until I started writing, and what made it even more special was I had made those blueberry pancakes with the sauce and used a paper plate with a silver spoon. @Katie Mack is my Substack sister so I am grateful that this piece found you through her. I can’t wait to see what you cultivate in your upcoming pieces and thank you for reading and commenting. This was the cherry on top of my day!
Thank you for reading, Lynelle. I agree in adulthood we have to parent ourselves into change. This narrative has been accepted as 'just the way it is' and it doesn't have to be this way at all. At some point we have to look at history and determine how to start writing a new narrative that uplifts and supports us this time.
Congratulations on being accepted and moving into your new home! As soon and I have some extra coins I'll be purchasing your book, so happy for you!!!

I've only used paper plates during Thanksgiving.
I know that’s right! Do you buy dishes for special occasions or does your set give luxury for all meals?
Really wonderful! The centering of ourselves, our worldviews is so so important. Thank you for this work. ✨
