I just want to say this was my first read on Substack. I either saw it as a recommendation, someone was sharing it, it was probably through Katie Mack talking about it. Either way, the cover got me. I don't know what it is with seeing homemade food like pancakes with blueberries and homemade bluberry syrup, but paired with the title it drew me in lol. I was suprised to see that the conversation hit home. I'm getting into writing but I find myself learning more and championing my thoughts with writing along the way. I've been taking more initiative with my work which is hard since I'm also a digital artist but I'm thankfully slowly leaving the studying phase. Long story short, your article made me want to talk more so I'm both glad and inspired. Thank you and please keep going <3.

I must admit that I had to take a moment to celebrate myself when I first read your comment, because what an honor! This is one of my proudest pieces because of how creative my process of creating it was. The inspiration for the piece started with the title paper plates are ghetto and I knew I wanted to write about the history of the word ghetto and how it’s been pushed onto us as Black people. But it didn’t flow until I started writing, and what made it even more special was I had made those blueberry pancakes with the sauce and used a paper plate with a silver spoon. @Katie Mack is my Substack sister so I am grateful that this piece found you through her. I can’t wait to see what you cultivate in your upcoming pieces and thank you for reading and commenting. This was the cherry on top of my day!

You know life has a funny way of working itself out. I hadn’t moved yet, the apartment fell through because I didn’t have the rent after paying the deposit. And I’ve been STRUGGLING to pick myself back up since. But when your comment came through it felt like confirmation of this inner feeling I’ve had all week that I’m getting keys to my home sooner than later. So thank you for the congratulations because I will carry this feeling with me until I am home and able to unpack! I appreciate you so much, the book will happen when it’s meant to happen I’m just grateful to know it’s on your list!

Thank you for this enjoyable read! I’m sorry your mother said those nasty words to you — broke is a label for objects, NEVER for people. May we all someday escape this narrative as a collective.

Thank you for reading my post, Vashti! And thank you for your kind words about my experiences. It’s tough speaking out about not having the kind of relationship with my mother that is ‘normal’ so I value your words A LOT! wow thank you so much!

This is definitely a read many can relate to. I had flashbacks of my childhood in this. In adulthood, the trueness of all of this hasn’t escape the culture. Only we can change the narrative we have built around ourselves

Thank you for reading, Lynelle. I agree in adulthood we have to parent ourselves into change. This narrative has been accepted as 'just the way it is' and it doesn't have to be this way at all. At some point we have to look at history and determine how to start writing a new narrative that uplifts and supports us this time.
